Jo’s Bar settles into The Setai’s lobby
A new bar at The Setai in Miami draws on Art Deco and Asian influences without turning either into a theme.
Jo’s Bar is the new link between Jaya and Japón at The Setai Hotel in Miami, designed by Saladino Design Studios as a natural meeting point in the lobby overlooking the central courtyard. Named for owner Joe Nakash, it takes the hotel’s Art Deco history and Asian influences as a starting point, but the designers say they were careful not to lean too hard on either. The result sounds measured rather than showy: a transition space intended to feel part of The Setai’s long-established character while still having its own identity.
The details are what give it shape. Behind the bar, a sculptural screen of textured resin blocks embedded with 24-carat gold leaf sits with brass framing and long glass shelves, designed to catch the light as the day fades. The bar itself is faced in Rosso Levanto stone, its deep burgundy cut with white veining, plus a bamboo-inspired relief and rounded edges. Elsewhere there are antique-mirrored columns, a framed entrance arch, a custom wine tower and metallic-mesh pendants, all handled with a fairly light touch.
Saladino’s team describe the atmosphere as elegant but not too formal, with warm, low lighting and reflective materials helping the room move easily from daytime to evening. If you are already heading to The Setai, this sounds like one to look for in the lobby rather than a stand-alone detour.
