SoHo has a new cocktail bar that isn't afraid of a little drama. Bar Leone, at 527 Broome Street, opened in September after a two-year collaboration between restaurateur Andres Diaz and BOND, the Manhattan architecture and interiors firm led by Noam Dvir and Daniel Rauchwerger.

The 2,400-square-foot space is really two bars in one. Upstairs is made for golden-hour lingering: warm sapele wood, soft lighting, corduroy-velvet seats and a bar counter in veined red travertine, with chrome taps set against matte details. Curved banquettes and generous sofas invite you to settle in with a creative martini, an Italian-inspired cocktail or even a caviar pairing.

Downstairs, the mood shifts to Italo disco. Red takes over, across velvet wallpaper, wavy vinyl banquettes and a bar in red lacquer and chrome, with playful doughnut-shaped wall lights looking on. The lighting is by Map Studio, with custom lamps made with Gantri and stools and tables from Milan's Spinzi Studio. The whole place has a space-age, 1980s feel.

Livingetc treats it as autumn decorating inspiration, but it sounds just as good for a long evening out. If you're in New York, it looks like the kind of room that makes you forget to check the time.
