Stefano Boeri's Loco Park masterplan for a former locomotive factory in Tbilisi

A Soviet-era factory site in Georgia's capital is to become homes, parks and workshops, in bricks coloured after the city itself.

Italian studio Stefano Boeri Architetti has won the competition to remake a former industrial site in Tbilisi, and its idea starts with what is already there: a large Soviet-era locomotive factory. The old building will be renovated, with some of its lost architectural features rebuilt in a contemporary way, and a new neighbourhood called Loco Park will grow up around it. Boeri describes the new buildings as "islands in an urban archipelago", separate but linked by tree-lined pedestrian spaces open to the whole city.

The detail worth lingering on is the colour. The studio mapped the shades found across Tbilisi's architecture and chose brick finishes to match: blue-grey, terracotta, green, taupe and white. Partner Pietro Chiodi says the aim was for each block to have its own identity while still reading as one place. Rooflines vary too, with vaulted, sawtooth and pitched forms that nod to old industrial sheds.

Apartments will sit on the upper floors, with shops, cafés and workshops at street level. Around them come sports facilities, parks and boulevards, while planted terraced roofs, greenhouses and communal rooms give residents places to meet.

For now this is a set of renders and a competition win, with no timeline given. One to keep an eye on if you follow how cities reuse their industrial past.
