A former brewery in Velká Bíteš becomes a community cultural centre
Acronym Collective Studio turns a corner-site brewery near Brno into a library, workshops and hall behind a curved brick facade.
In the small town of Velká Bíteš, near Brno, a building that brewed beer until 1942, then served as storage and later as 1960s flats, has been given back to the public. Acronym Collective Studio has turned it into the Kulturní Centrum Pivovar, or Brewery Cultural Centre, holding a library, information centre, family centre, community hall and creative workshops under one roof.
Architect Pavel Gebauer says decades of alterations had "weakened" the building's presence on its prominent corner. The biggest move is shifting the main entrance to the rounded corner facing the square, so you now walk straight into the information centre and a new exposed-concrete spiral stair, lit by a full-height internal window shared with the first-floor library.
Downstairs, the old vaulted brewery cellars hold an exhibition space and workshops, with arched windows onto a small rear courtyard. At the top, low residential ceilings were stripped out so the community hall could rise into a gabled roof of timber slats, with grey curtains to close it off when needed. Outside, a grey brick plinth with perforated sections sits beneath white brick; inside, the palette is a hardwearing mix of concrete, masonry and pale timber.
Worth a look for anyone interested in how a modest town reuses its industrial past, and an easy side trip from Brno.
