Lacaton & Vassal win the 2027 Le Prix Charlotte Perriand
The French studio known for transforming social housing rather than demolishing it receives an award named after Charlotte Perriand.
Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal have built a reputation on a simple, stubborn idea: look hard at what already exists and make it better. That approach has earned their studio, Lacaton & Vassal Architectes, the 2027 Le Prix Charlotte Perriand from the Créateurs Design Association, which praised work that improves living conditions while saving resources and architectural heritage.
The prize, set up with Perriand's family, fits neatly. The pair said her pursuit of comfort and everyday pleasure, and her political commitment to exposing poor housing, still feel deeply relevant. Their own record backs that up. Founded in 1989, the studio transformed the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and the Cité du Grand Parc housing in Bordeaux, which won the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2019. They also renovated the 1960s Tour Bois-le-Prêtre tower block in Paris and turned a former shipbuilding workshop in Dunkirk into the FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais art gallery.
The award will be presented on 16 January 2027 at the Shangri-La Paris, where Kengo Kuma will also be honoured with a lifetime achievement award. It joins a long list for the studio, including the 2021 Pritzker Prize.
Award news rather than anything to book, but a good prompt to seek out their reworked buildings next time you're in Paris, Bordeaux or Dunkirk.
