After years of argument over the future of San Siro, Milan's two big clubs have a design for their next home. Foster + Partners and MANICA have unveiled Generali Stadium, a 71,500-seat arena that AC Milan and Inter will share. It will rise beside the old Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, which is due to be partly demolished once the clubs move.

The look comes from the city itself. Intersecting concrete X-frames run from the ground-level colonnades up to the roof, and their repeating geometry is meant to echo the intricate stonework of the Duomo. Diamond-shaped openings at the entrances give glimpses inside and lead to naturally ventilated concourses with views over Milan. Overhead, a double-curved roof follows the changing height of the stands, carries about 27,500 square metres of solar panels and is shaped to push crowd noise back onto the pitch.

The architects have clearly paid attention to what fans love about the old ground. The two Curvas behind the goals rise at angles of up to 37 degrees, each holding about 11,700 supporters, so the steep, close atmosphere should survive the move.

The stadium is part of a wider 281,000-square-metre redevelopment with parks, shops and concerts planned. Construction is expected to start in 2028, with the first match targeted for the 2031/32 season. One for football and architecture fans to keep an eye on.
