Christopher John Rogers, the Louisiana-born, New York-based fashion designer, built his first rug collection around the parts of making clothes that usually get swept away: draping, cutting, chalk lines, thread, and the smears and slips left by the hand. The Studio by Christopher John Rogers for The Rug Company was developed with the brand's creative director, Will Cooper. It follows earlier fashion collaborations with Alexander McQueen, Diane von Furstenberg and Vivienne Westwood.

There are six designs, in flatweaves and plush piles, hand-knotted and woven in silk and wool. Rogers points to the abstract paintings of Morris Louis and Ellsworth Kelly, to his archive runway looks and, most directly, to scribbled marker tests from his 2022 pre-fall collection. He likes the idea that something accidental becomes the thing worth keeping. Paintstroke reads like a wet stripe of pigment; Chalk Line sets raised cross-hatching against a neutral ground.

The colours are his familiar ones, toned down: faded primaries mixed with warm earth shades, with construction that gives each piece a sense of patina. Cooper says they wanted the rugs to look as if they could come from any decade. AD shows them in his own apartment, a private home. Worth a look for anyone drawn to the meeting point of fashion, painting and the floor beneath their feet.
