Villa Necchi Campiglio

Piero Portaluppi's 1930s villa on quiet Via Mozart, now an FAI house museum, preserves how Milan's industrial elite lived between the wars, down to the library books, garden pool and tennis court.

The story

Built between 1932 and 1935 for the Necchi family, this house blends Italian Rationalist lines with Art Deco touches. Its spacious foyer leads through basement, ground floor, first floor and attic, each with its own role, and details such as the elevator, intercoms, integrated heating and lighting, and Portaluppi's thought-out spaces for household staff show design ahead of its time. The villa belonged to two sisters who opened it to the public. The rooms remain fully furnished, with paintings by Canaletto, Picasso, Modigliani and Matisse among the decorative arts, and a top-floor gallery devoted to Portaluppi's work. Outside, a peaceful garden holds a tennis court and Milan's first private swimming pool, with coffee served poolside. The villa has appeared in the films I Am Love and House of Gucci.
