Alcatraz

Concert hall on weeknights and three-room disco on Friday and Saturday, Alcatraz holds up to 3,500 standing guests near Milan's Maciachini metro stop, with rock, metal and pop tours filling its stages.

The story

Live music has been part of the venue from the start, with a calendar running from Europe's 40th-anniversary tour and Behemoth with Dimmu Borgir to Simple Plan and Rokia Traoré. The main floor slopes down toward the stage, so sightlines hold from the back, and a large balcony gives a less crowded view. Sound, lighting and video systems stay installed, which also makes the 3,000 square metres a setting for conventions, fashion shows and film premieres. On Friday and Saturday the space turns into a nightclub with themed parties across three rooms and three bars. A night might open with a live alt-rock set in the main room before a DJ switches to hip hop and dance, while the other rooms play Latin music and techno. The club crowd is young, mostly under 30.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • The cloakroom charges for each item, so leave heavy jackets and bags at the hotel or in the car.
  • It gets warm inside during concerts, so dress in light layers.
  • Head for the large balcony if you want a less crowded view of the stage, especially with children.
