Triennale di Milano

Giovanni Muzio's rationalist Palazzo dell'Arte beside Parco Sempione has housed Milan's institution for design, architecture and contemporary culture since 1933, with a permanent Italian design collection and changing exhibitions.

The story

The Triennale began in 1923 as an exhibition of decorative arts in the park of Monza's Villa Reale, then moved to Milan in 1933, guided by figures such as Gio Ponti and Mario Sironi. Its building offers 12,000 square metres of exhibition rooms and public space, and the institution still stages an International Exhibition every three years; the 24th edition, Inequalities, ran in 2025. The Museo del Design Italiano gathers around 400 objects designed between the 1920s and 2000, while temporary shows have included a major Lella and Massimo Vignelli retrospective. Beyond the galleries are a theatre, Voce for music and sound, the Cuore library and archive, restaurants and a garden. Entry to the building is free, with tickets needed for some exhibitions.
