Sforzesco Castle
Francesco Sforza's 15th-century fortress in central Milan pairs freely open courtyards with museums holding Michelangelo's unfinished Rondanini Pietà, tapestries, painted ceilings and musical instruments, with Parco Sempione spreading out behind it.
The story
The Visconti family laid the first foundations in the 1360s, and the Republic of Milan tore that fortification down in 1447. From 1450 Francesco Sforza, newly Duke of Milan, rebuilt on its remains. Renovated and expanded over time, it became one of Europe's largest fortresses in the 16th and 17th centuries, and Luca Beltrami extensively reconstructed it between 1891 and 1905. A large fountain plays in front, and the grounds and courtyards are free to wander. Ticketed museums inside cover sculpture, paintings, tapestries, ceramics, painted stained glass, antique furniture, weapons and musical instruments, with a work by Da Vinci among the art. A short walk along the walls offers views, there is a cafeteria and gift shop, and the lawns of Parco Sempione open up directly behind.
