A little Mad Men glamour at Canary Wharf
Holloway Li gives Locke's new London apart-hotel walnut, lacquer and a sofa pit in every room.
Canary Wharf might not be the first place you'd look for a stylish stay, but Locke London Canary Wharf makes a strong case. Design studio Holloway Li took the district's office-world heritage and filtered it through the 1960s workplace of Mad Men: walnut, chrome, burgundy lacquer and a hint of after-hours fun. It's the studio's third project for Locke, after Bermonds Locke and WunderLocke in Munich.
The waterfront tower has 279 studios and suites over 19 floors, many with views across the Thames. Downstairs, the big open ground floor is broken into a series of cosy 'sets', each with its own colours and furniture: a lounge in deep greens and burgundies, co-working spaces, a café and a bar. Look out for the oak-burr and lacquer bookshelves, a stainless-steel and blue DJ booth inspired by 1960s car design, and a library café with bright blue tabletops, a sly nod to film-set blue screens. LUQA bar channels the three-martini lunch with a green marble counter and fluted oak.
The rooms are calmer, with dark walnut framing, sage-green walls, oak floors and striped green tiles in the bathrooms. The best part is the oversized sofa pit beside the bed, a wink to Don Draper's conversation pit and a great spot to gather friends.
