The idea behind the Shenzhen Natural History Museum is that it shouldn't look like a building at all. Kim Herforth Nielsen of Danish studio 3XN, lead designer in a consortium with B+H Architects and Zhubo Design, says "nothing in nature is square", and the aim was a piece of terrain that seems always to have been there, shaped by geology, water and time.

Set in a green park in the Pingshan District, between Yanzi Hill and the Pingshan River, the museum has a curving façade of granite and shingle-like lamellas meant to resemble a cliff rising from water. Inside are around 100,000 square metres of exhibition and visitor space, but the detail you'd notice first is the roof: the whole of it is a public park, free to wander. Five themed planting zones run across it, with rare and native species, regional tropical plants and some that appear in Chinese literature.

B+H's landscape team also wanted the arrival spaces and routes towards the wetland to carry the visit beyond the galleries, so planting, water, views and the seasons become part of the story. The designers frame it as Shenzhen, long known for tech and speed, turning towards culture and nature.

Worth the trip for anyone curious about architecture that behaves like a hillside; give yourself time for the roof as well as the galleries.
