A mirrored pause above Lech
Snøhetta turns a cable car station roof into a reflective lookout in the Austrian Alps.
Snøhetta has added a small but striking lookout to the roof of the Zugerbergbahn cable car station in Lech, in Austria’s Vorarlberg region. Called Lech Mountain Mirror, it is designed as a place to stop rather than rush through: a shallow pool of water that reflects the surrounding peaks and clouds, with stepping stones leading visitors across its surface to a single rock rising from the water.
The idea is simple, but the experience sounds changeable. On still, clear days the mountains appear sharply in the pool; when the wind picks up, the reflection breaks into ripples and the scene shifts. Snøhetta’s Patrick Lüth said the project turns an infrastructure building into a place for sensory experience, while the studio describes the weather itself as part of the work. Around the water are green areas and informal seats made from larch wood and stone boulders.
It is free to access, and the article says it forms part of a wider push to draw visitors to Lech beyond ski season, alongside other art initiatives in development by Antony Gormley and James Turrell. If you are already heading into the mountains, this looks like a good reason to leave a little extra time at the station.
