A concrete house with gardens at every turn
In Nghệ An, HGAA shapes a family home around a courtyard, terraces and a rooftop vegetable garden.
House K is a family home in Nghệ An that starts with a simple idea: make greenery part of everyday life. Designed by local studio HGAA, the 885-square-metre house is arranged around a central courtyard, with stepped terraces, bedroom gardens and a rooftop vegetable plot threaded through its plan. The studio told Dezeen that simplicity, sustainability and harmony with local life guided the project, with circulation shaped as a daily encounter with plants, shade and open air.
The house itself is a U-shaped composition of exposed-concrete volumes, set back from the street behind a front garden. A paved path leads past the parking area into a central patio and barbecue space, while tall bamboo helps screen the glazed ground floor. Inside, a hall and staircase sit at the centre, with the kitchen and dining room on one side and a double-height living room on the other. Even the more enclosed bedrooms and bathrooms on the eastern side were planned to keep contact with a garden, while upper-floor bedrooms look onto the courtyard and terraces.
At the top of the house, the vegetable garden and extra planting help hide technical and storage spaces while adding another layer of shade and cooling. HGAA also says the layout responds to the client’s feng shui requirements. There is nothing to visit here, but it is a thoughtful read for anyone interested in how a house can make climate, planting and daily routine work together.
