Pedrali's timber pavilion near Bergamo becomes a permanent community hub
Michele De Lucchi's 2023 anniversary pavilion stays put, gaining a brass roof, an auditorium and a showroom for outdoor furniture.
When the Italian furniture maker Pedrali turned 60 in 2023, it asked AMDL CIRCLE and Michele De Lucchi for a pavilion at its headquarters in Mornico al Serio, near Bergamo. The spruce structure, 50 metres long and nine high, with arched timber portals tied by beams, was built to be taken apart and reused elsewhere. Instead, Pedrali has kept it standing as a permanent place for art, education, talks and local life.
The skeleton survives, but the wooden roof has given way to brass shingles of the same size and pattern, burnished and satin-finished so their shifting tones recall weathered wood. Visitors arrive in an arena that leads upstairs to a new auditorium lined in larch, with matte oak floors. Below, a glassy showroom by DWA Design Studio displays the outdoor collections behind glossy sand-coloured partitions, with photographs by Alecio Ferrari. Geothermal heating and cooling are planned.
The old shingles weren't binned: students from La Traccia Art High School Centre in Calcinate turned them into decorative objects and screens. Outside, Luserna stone paths, terraced green seating and seasonal trees link the building to its setting.
The piece doesn't give visiting hours or event details, so check with Pedrali before making the trip; it's a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in timber building and reuse near Bergamo.
