A pavilion made to weather back into the forest
In Les Gavarres, Atelier DARN has built a temporary land art pavilion from wood and biodegradable printed modules.
Atelier DARN’s Woven is a temporary pavilion in the Les Gavarres landscape near Girona that treats architecture as part of a longer natural cycle. Built for the 2026 Art & Gavarres International Land Art Festival, it is made entirely from nature-based materials: wood and roughly 700 interlocking 3D-printed modules made from a biodegradable miscanthus filament. The idea is simple and quite radical: a structure that can stand in the landscape, change with it, and eventually return to it.
The pavilion rises from the forest floor towards the surrounding trees, taking its cues from climbing plants and vines. Its parts connect without glue, rope or synthetic fixings, so the whole thing reads as a woven system rather than a sealed object. As vegetation grows over it, the pavilion is intended to merge more closely with the site before weathering and decomposing over time.
There is also a quiet nod to Catalan architectural history in the cross-shaped section of each module, which Atelier DARN says was inspired by the columns of Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion. That four-way geometry lets the pieces extend in several directions as the structure grows. Worth a look for anyone interested in how temporary architecture can leave less behind.
