La Unión's municipal sports centre, known locally as EL POLI, has had a very cheerful makeover. Murcia-based meii estudio added two new elements to the much-loved complex, and neither is shy.

The first is the entrance building. It brings the changing rooms, offices and café together under one long, low roof, wrapped in ribbed ceramic tiles of vivid lime green. The colour stands out against the old mining landscape around the town. At the front, a metal facade folds fully open, so the line between street and sports ground disappears and the entrance becomes a public space.

The second is LA PÉRGOLA, a canopy of solar panels above the football stands. Its shape comes entirely from the sun: the panels face south at exactly the angle that suits La Unión's latitude, which gives the roof its folded, sawtooth profile. It's built on a steel frame and clad in blue metal, so it changes colour as the light moves and plays off the green entrance nearby.

Together, the two pieces generate clean energy, shade the spectators and give the town a bold new landmark. It's not a hospitality venue, but the café sits inside the new entrance if you're passing through.
