The Zetter Collection is taking its first step beyond the UK. In early 2027 the boutique group will open The Zetter 717 Amsterdam, in a canal house on Prinsengracht in the city's UNESCO-listed Canal District.

The building has plenty of history to work with. The main house dates from 1810 and is built in the Empire style, with a 17th-century structure behind it. It's already loved by locals, and the team says its aim is to respect the building and the neighbourhood rather than reinvent them.

There will be just 24 bedrooms, which feels right for a canal house. James Thurstan Waterworth, who designed The Zetter Bloomsbury, is leading the redesign. The plans include two shared spaces: the Garden Room, styled like a conservatory, and The Library, an intimate bar. Managing director Kevin Rockey talks about warm, intuitive hospitality and becoming part of the local community, and Yara Al Hattouni has been appointed general manager.

This is a signing with an opening date rather than a finished hotel, so there's nothing to see inside yet. Still, a small, thoughtfully designed hotel on one of Amsterdam's loveliest canals is an easy thing to look forward to.
