TUK TUK THAI STREET FOOD
Wooden stools face the open kitchen at this small Koukaki spot, laid out like an Asian hawkers market and cooking Thai staples from tom yam goong to panang curry and drunken noodles.
The story
Tuk Tuk was designed to feel like a hawkers market: patrons sit on wooden stools overlooking the kitchen and watch the chefs at work. The space is small, with counter seats as well as tables, and the food is street-food style, made for a quick bite rather than a long, formal dinner. The menu runs through the classics. Tom yam goong, a spicy shrimp soup with lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves, is a standout, as is the panang curry with coconut milk and fresh basil, served with jasmine rice. There are also khanom jeeb dumplings, curry puffs filled with chicken and potato, papaya salad, pad see ew, red curry with duck and panko-fried prawns. Staff ask about your spice tolerance and help steer you through the dishes.
