Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library
Set on a butte above Medora beside Theodore Roosevelt National Park, this museum tells Roosevelt's story through highly interactive galleries inside a building shaped to blend into the Badlands, with a walkable living roof.
The story
The library traces the man millions call Teddy from the Badlands that shaped him to the White House, framed around three ideas he lived by: leadership, citizenship and conservation. A wristband handed out at check-in unlocks interactive stations, builds a digital journal emailed afterwards and lets younger children collect hide-and-seek animals tucked into each room. There are AI photo booths and a chance to speak with Roosevelt himself, alongside memorabilia, photographs and videos. The architecture echoes its setting, with walls that mimic the layered soils of the surrounding land and large windows framing the prairie. Outside, a living roof, a one-mile boardwalk and walking trails open onto wide views, with bench swings and a restaurant for a meal. A guided Architecture and Sustainability tour explains how the design carries Roosevelt's conservation ideals forward.
