The Yard Theatre

A charity-run theatre in Hackney Wick, the Yard reopened after a year-long rebuild with a bigger auditorium, a roomier bar and food, while keeping its post-industrial edge and appetite for new writers and risky shows.

The story

The Yard is a charity that backs new writers, new artists and original, daring work. Its rebuilt home keeps the post-industrial character of its Hackney Wick setting, now with more comfortable seating, good sightlines from every seat and much improved facilities. The reopening production was Philosophy of the World, and the programme has ranged from a cabaret-style, contemporary take on Saturnalia performed by young actors to Lear and Mrs Dalloway. The spacious bar is a place to linger before or after a show, and the venue now serves its own food, with rosé on tap. Membership comes in several tiers, including a free Yard Card, and brings priority booking, no exchange fees and every fourth show free, with the money going straight back into new work.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • The theatre now serves its own food, so it is worth eating here rather than elsewhere in the area before a show.
  • The rebuilt bar is much more spacious and comfortable, making it a good spot to arrive early or stay on afterwards.
  • Try the rosé wine on tap at the bar.
