The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze: Hudson Valley
More than 7,000 jack o'lanterns, all hand-carved on site, light up the 18th-century riverside grounds of Van Cortlandt Manor each autumn, set to synchronized lighting and an original soundtrack.
The story
Historic Hudson Valley, a non-profit education organization, stages this Halloween trail, and its proceeds support the group's programs. A team of artisans designs and carves the pumpkins on site, arranging them into themed scenes, tunnels and sculptures. Many displays change from year to year, alongside returning favorites such as life-sized dinosaurs, a Pumpkin Planetarium and a working carousel. Midway along the path, the Gourd & Goblet Tavern occupies an 18th-century brick building, once a ferryman's house, where table service brings signature cocktails, snacks and tavern games. The Headless Horseman's Hideaway is a pop-up lounge with Legend-inspired cocktails and visits from the Horseman himself. A courtyard snack stand serves fall-themed sweets, and a gift shop sells exclusive souvenirs and local finds.
