The Broadmoor
Since 1918 this Colorado Springs resort has paired historic grandeur with Rocky Mountain scenery, and it holds the record as the world's longest-running Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five-Diamond resort.
The story
Set at the base of the mountains beside Cheyenne Lake, The Broadmoor has 784 rooms, suites, cottages and brownstones. Its interiors are full of handwork: carved wood, painted frescoes, brass sculptures, a wood-panelled library, an art gallery, walls of century-old liquor bottles and portraits of famous guests. The Colorado Golf Hall of Fame is on site too. Dining runs from the formal Penrose Room to Summit and a lakeside Sunday brunch, while PLAY adds a six-lane bowling alley. Beyond the main grounds are a zip-line course with rope bridges and a 180-foot rappel, the 224 steps of Seven Falls and the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The resort also runs three all-inclusive wilderness retreats: Cloud Camp at 9,100 feet, a ranch in Pike National Forest and a fly fishing camp on the Tarryall River.
Good to know
TAGGG AI- ✦Reserve Sunday brunch ahead; the concierge can help arrange tables for larger groups at the on-site restaurants.
- ✦You don't need to stay overnight to spend a couple of hours exploring the art gallery, grounds and hotel.
- ✦The lakeside is a good spot to sit with a drink, and golfers visiting in March may find the course closed.
