The Albany

Deptford's community arts centre runs theatre, gigs, family shows and club nights like Deptford Northern Soul Club, with a vegetarian café stocked partly from its own garden and a history stretching back to 1894.

The story

The Albany began in 1894 as The Deptford Fund, set up to help local people, and opened the Albany Institute in 1899. As the Albany Empire in the 1970s it became a home for radical community arts. After fire destroyed that building in 1978, Diana, Princess of Wales, opened the current purpose-built centre in 1982. There are four performance spaces. The main room holds about 300, with standing room downstairs and an upstairs ring around the stage with some seating and a bar, rearranged for theatre, acoustic gigs or children's shows. Rehearsal rooms, a coworking hub, youth takeovers and an over-65s arts club fill the rest of the week. The building sits across from Margaret McMillan Park, backing onto Deptford Market Yard.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • The vegetarian café serves coffee and mushroom vegan rolls, with an outdoor sitting area overlooking the garden.
  • The main space suits theatre and acoustic or smaller-band gigs better than heavy, large-scale sets.
  • Families can catch children's shows and free workshops, such as a recent frog-themed session for kids.
