Thanasis grills its kebabs at the foot of the Acropolis beside Monastiraki Square, serving them on soft pita with onion, parsley and yogurt to tables that spill along the whole block.
The story
The house speciality is the Thanasis kebab, simply grilled and juicy, alongside the yogurtlou kebab, where the meat sits on pita under yogurt and tomato sauce. The menu also runs to a double kebab, wrapped kebab, chicken, pork and beef portions, saganaki, grilled peppers, tzatziki finished with olive oil and a village salad. Portions are large enough that many dishes are easily shared. Seating fills an indoor room and a long run of outdoor tables shaded by the trees of Plateia Dimopratiriou, where the crowds moving through Monastiraki make for steady people-watching. Cold beer and mezedes round out the meal, and the tables draw locals as well as tourists, giving the place a lively, casual feel.
