Taliesin West

Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and studio from 1937 until his death in 1959, Taliesin West sits at the foot of the McDowell Mountains and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The story

Wright and his apprentices in the Taliesin Fellowship began wintering in Arizona in 1935, and he bought this desert site two years later. The apprentices camped here while raising the first buildings between 1938 and 1941. Walls of desert masonry, local rock set in concrete, were originally topped with wood-and-canvas roofs, and the structures sit on a 45-degree grid linked by courtyards and walkways. Inside, triangles, hexagons and natural motifs recur through the drafting room, dining room, garden court, kiva room and Wright family residence. Some boulders carry Hohokam petroglyphs, one of which inspired the official logo. The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, headquartered here, runs tours, illuminated evening visits and a sunset cocktail gathering called Sunset and Sips, with views over the city below.
