Rubell Museum

In Allapattah, the Rubell Museum lays out contemporary art across 36 rooms on a single level, with whole galleries given to Yayoi Kusama, Keith Haring, Basquiat and Yoshitomo Nara.

The story

Well-known names hang alongside emerging artists here. Beyond the headline rooms there are galleries for Sterling Ruby, Thomas Houseago and Kehinde Wiley, whose bold, vibrant canvases stand out. Many works are three-dimensional, and placards beside the pieces explain not only artist, year and medium but also what inspired them. The exhibits are switched out about once a year. Kusama's Infinity Rooms, including "Where the lights in my heart go," sit behind a separate add-on ticket. A scavenger hunt runs through the galleries and ends with a sticker prize, and sticky notes can be posted near the lockers. The museum also serves as an event space and has a sister museum in Washington, DC. It is easy to reach from the Santa Clara Metrorail station, and there is a restaurant next door for a meal afterwards.

  • Allow around two hours to see everything, or longer if you want to finish the scavenger hunt.
