Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Center

In the village of Harrania near Giza, weavers at this cooperative create wool and cotton tapestries freehand, without patterns, following a method architect Ramses Wissa Wassef began teaching local children in 1951.

The story

Ramses Wissa Wassef, a Cairo-born architect trained in Paris, believed creativity was innate and that formal teaching stifled it. He gave village children tools and materials but no templates, letting them choose their own subjects and colours. Their tapestries of rural Egyptian life, nature and folklore earned international recognition, and the centre has run as a cooperative since his death in 1974. The workshops and gallery sit in mud-built rooms surrounded by greenery, a calm contrast to Cairo. In the ateliers, weavers work at their looms and explain their pieces, while pottery and batik are also made here. Members of the founding family still run the centre, and the Giza pyramids are not far away.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Staff often give a short tour of the workshops and gallery, explaining the founder's philosophy, and weavers are happy to show their work.
  • Tapestries are priced as artworks rather than souvenirs, though smaller sizes and postcards offer more affordable options.
  • The entrance is tucked down an alley-like side road, so look for the brown wall and follow the signs; parking is available.
