Raffles London at The OWO

The Old War Office on Whitehall, where Churchill had an office and Ian Fleming worked in naval intelligence, now holds a 120-room Raffles hotel with restaurants by Mauro Colagreco, a rooftop Japanese restaurant and a Guerlain spa.

The story

Built for the British Army in 1906, the Edwardian Baroque building took hundreds of craftspeople eight years to restore, bringing back hand-laid mosaic floors, oak panelling and chandeliers. Its 2.5 miles of corridors lead to rooms and suites designed by the late Thierry Despont; the Heritage Suites occupy former offices of political and military leaders, and Corner Suites in the cupolas overlook Whitehall. Mauro Colagreco runs three dining rooms: Saison, an all-day space with double-height ceilings and a breakfast oyster bar; his vegetable-focused signature restaurant; and Mauro's Table. Kioku by Endo on the roof looks toward Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. The Guards Bar nods to the Household Cavalry opposite, and the Guerlain Spa has a 20-metre pool.
