Panathenaic Stadium

Built in white Attic marble in a hairpin shape, this is the stadium of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, on a site where Lycurgus first raised a stadium in 330/329 BC.

The story

Lycurgus, the Athenian orator and politician, built the first stadium here in 330/329 BC, and Herod Atticus rebuilt it in 140–143 AD. German architect Ernest Ziller led the first substantial excavation in 1869/1870, and Georgios Averoff paid for the marble renovation that readied it for the first modern Olympics in 1896. It returned to the Olympics in 2004, hosting archery and the marathon finish. A visit lets you walk the stands, run onto the track and pose on the podium. A vaulted passage leads to the permanent exhibition of Olympic posters and torches from 1896 to today. The upper bleachers of Section 21 look out over the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Zappeion, the National Garden and Lycabettus Hill. An audio guide comes with admission.
