OKU Hotel

A former department store in Taichung's old quarter now holds this 80-room Art Deco boutique hotel, built around a three-storey wine tower in Ailìse Bar, the city's first gin-focused bar.

The story

OKU Hotel occupies the old Sakurada department store and takes its theme from that past, styling itself 'The Department of Traveler's Tales'. Art Deco lines, gold detailing and East-meets-West touches with a hint of Alice in Wonderland run through the building. The lobby bar rises three floors around Taiwan's tallest indoor wine tower, and Ailìse Bar, shortlisted for the 2026 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, pours creative gin-led cocktails. Lumen, the restaurant, shapes its cooking around light and the seasons, and the hotel hosts live jazz performances. There is also a cigar lounge and meeting space. Rooms are spacious, several with handmade copper tubs, and Zhonghua night market sits right beside the hotel, with well-known stalls around the corner. The hotel was listed in the MICHELIN Guide within half a year of opening.
