Oaka

Oaka is the bus stop at the end of Kymis Boulevard in Marousi, the transit gateway to the Athens Olympic complex where the 2004 Games were held.

The story

The stop marks the last point on Kymis Boulevard, which runs north to Plapouta Street in Iraklio and also gives access to the Attiki Odos motorway. To the west lies Ano Psallidi, the westernmost district of the Municipality of Marousi. Step off and you are at the grounds of Greece's largest stadium, venue of the 2004 Olympic Games, set beneath Calatrava's architecture. Around it are a swimming centre, a basketball arena and football and athletics facilities; the indoor hall hosted a 2017 Panathinaikos–Fenerbahçe basketball playoff, and the stadium has served as AEK's temporary home. Between events the open grounds draw people of all ages for walking, running, cycling and skateboarding, and festivals such as Colour Day take place here.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Parking around the training grounds is hard to find, so public transport is the easier way to reach the complex.
  • The open grounds suit families and work well for walking, running, cycling and skateboarding at any time of day.
  • Catching a match here is worthwhile for the atmosphere, with good sightlines and acoustics from every seat.
