O Agrios The Dirty Butcher

Behind the former Athens Hilton in Ilisia, this butcher's tavern puts its own meat counter on show at the entrance and grills chops, steaks and offal for a lively, meat-focused dinner.

The story

O Agrios calls itself the butcher's tavern of Ilisia, a restaurant built around the meat trade. The butchery sits like a showcase by the door, and the owner, well known on Instagram, has drawn a following to the place. Inside, a refined dining room and a good bar set off the deliberately "dirty" cuts on the menu, while the room carries a loud, convivial tavern energy. Lamb chops and fattier ewe chops, known as provatina, come off the grill alongside T-bone, spare ribs, sausage, liver, grilled mushrooms and a lamb burger, plus a meat of the day. Sides stay with tavern classics such as tomato with capers, potatoes and saganaki, and the wine list is chosen to suit the meat. A generous complimentary dessert, with several sweets on the plate, can round off the meal.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Saturdays get busy enough that ordering can take a while, so allow extra time on weekend evenings.
  • The ewe chops come with plenty of fat; staff will flag this, so order them if you enjoy richer cuts.
  • Pair the steaks with a bottle from the wine list, which is a strong match for the meat.
