Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona

Richard Meier's white building in El Raval houses Barcelona's contemporary art museum, with a collection running from the second half of the 20th century to today, bold temporary shows and a skater-filled square outside.

The story

Clean lines, expansive glass walls and abundant natural light give the galleries a minimalist setting that lets the work take centre stage, while a long ramp rises through the atrium. The collection mixes installations, video art, photography and conceptual pieces, and the museum runs guided tours of its own buildings. Beyond the galleries, MACBA works as a hub for programmes, publications, a library, an Independent Studies Programme and Ràdio Web MACBA. Recent seasons have featured Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme, a centenary for Aurèlia Muñoz, Pere Portabella's films and video from the collection. A free digital guide carries artists' and curators' voices through the rooms. Outside, skateboarders fill the square, part of the daily life of this historic neighbourhood.

Good to know

  • Bags must go in a locker that takes a 1 euro coin, so bring one with you.
  • The square outside is a gathering spot for Barcelona's skateboarding community, worth a look before or after your visit.
