Municipal Gallery of Athens

Works by some 3,000 artists, most of them Greek, make up the City of Athens' art collection, shown in changing exhibitions inside a former silk factory in Metaxourgeio.

The story

The Municipal Gallery traces the course of Greek art through its trends, foreign influences and debates. Almost every major figure in 20th-century modern Greek art is represented, and half the holdings were acquired between 1930 and 1940. A notable collection of engravings covers masters of the form alongside newer printmakers. The gallery began on Akadimias Street in 1974 and moved in 1982 to an 1874 neoclassical building by Panagis Kalkos on Koumoundourou Square. Exhibitions spread across two buildings and range from modern work to retrospectives of Greek artists, such as a show on a husband-and-wife pair focused on the 1950s. Outside summer, it runs children's programmes and guided walks on themes like old Athens neighbourhoods and the Acropolis.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Exhibitions rotate every two to three months, so check what is showing before you go.
  • Weekdays tend to be quiet, and the galleries can feel almost empty.
  • An open-air café and restaurant set among trees opposite the gallery make an easy stop afterwards.
