Morchella
Mediterranean sharing plates come out of an open kitchen in a former bank just off Exmouth Market, where Morchella is known for its focaccia, mussel pil pil, spanakopita and crackling-topped pork jowl.
The story
The old bank building has tall ceilings and a spacious room that mixes small and larger tables, with counter seats facing the chefs at work. Cutlery and menus are kept in drawers, a detail in keeping with the building's style, and the room tends to buzz with a lively, mixed crowd. Dishes are built for sharing: mussels in a spicy garlic and paprika sauce on focaccia, spanakopita in crisp filo, pork jowl with membrillo and onion compote, salted cod churros, radicchio with panzanella and a mushroom reginette. At lunch there is a set menu that changes every few days, and a five-plate menu is also offered. Strawberry panna cotta and a dark chocolate dessert finish the meal, alongside cocktails and organic wines by the glass, including an orange wine from Sicily.
Good to know
TAGGG AI- ✦Counter seats give a view of the chefs but are tight and less comfortable, so request a table if comfort matters.
- ✦The pork jowl, mussel pil pil and salted cod churros are the dishes most worth ordering.
- ✦The room can get loud, so it suits a lively meal more than a quiet, in-depth conversation.
