Milwaukee Art Museum

Wisconsin's largest art museum covers works from antiquity to the present day, and its white Calatrava building on Lake Michigan is known for the Burke Brise Soleil, a pair of moving 'wings'.

The story

The Reiman Bridge, a pedestrian suspension bridge, links downtown Milwaukee to the museum's lakefront campus, where the Oak Leaf Trail runs past the East Lawn. Inside the Calatrava building, the soaring Windover Hall opens onto galleries laid out with space to take in each piece, and the building's structure and roof are as much a draw as the art. The collection ranges across American, European, modern and contemporary art, with strengths in Haitian art, 20th- and 21st-century design, photography and media arts, prints and drawings, and folk and self-taught work. Exhibitions such as 'The Shakers: A World in the Making' rotate through the year, children can paint in the art studio, and the Art in Bloom event fills the galleries with floral arrangements, live music and a marketplace.
