Messner Mountain Museum Corones

Zaha Hadid's concrete museum cuts into the rock of Plan de Corones at 2,275 metres, telling the story of traditional mountaineering through ropes, hammers, art and relics framed by Dolomite views.

The story

The final piece of Reinhold Messner's museum series, MMM Corones questions mountaineering rather than celebrating it. Its focus is traditional alpinism: its history, its equipment and how it evolved, and what it means to face a mountain as a confrontation with oneself rather than a route to fame. Messner frames it as distilling 250 years of encounter between mountain and human. The building seems to slide into the rock, all concrete and clean lines. Inside, equipment, oil paintings, sculptures and words sit along spatial axes that steer the eye toward the peaks, with large windows and a balcony opening onto the Dolomites. A short looped film on Messner's exploits plays in a cinema room, and there is a small gift shop. Skiers can reach the museum directly from the slopes.
