Maison François
Just behind Fortnum's on Duke Street St James's, this French brasserie serves classical cooking in a vast, high-ceilinged room, with trolleys wheeling steak tartare and desserts between the tables.
The story
The dining room is large and tall yet carefully planned, so tables feel private, and the design is contemporary and elegant. The menu runs from breakfast through lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, built on French dishes: onion tatin, escargot flatbread, pâté en croûte, a deep French onion soup, rotisserie chicken and a snail stew under pastry. Steak tartare on bone marrow is made to order at the table. Downstairs, Frank's works as a deli counter for breakfast and lunch, then becomes a bar à vin from mid-afternoon, with cocktails and DJs some nights. There is also a salon privé and wine room for private groups of up to eighteen. The kitchen has a sister in Café François at Borough Market, and the brasserie sits in a neighbourhood of galleries.
