LUMEN - Museum of Mountain Photography
At 2,265 metres on the summit of Kronplatz, Lumen traces mountain photography from rare artefacts to digital camera technology, across four floors of interactive rooms with wide Dolomite views.
The story
The permanent exhibitions blend history, art and technique. The room of mirrors pairs rare artefacts from mountain photography with a seemingly endless mirrored space that evokes the atmosphere of the peaks. Pixel Storm explains how light passes through a lens system onto a camera's photosensitive diodes, while Mountain Mania follows the picture postcard, invented in the late 19th century, as it brought mountain motifs to a mass audience. A simulated helicopter flight and a 3D experience add to the hands-on side. The architecture is striking inside and out, with hidden corners, a lift and a large glass window lined with armchairs facing the panorama. A restaurant in the same building has a terrace hanging over the Alps, and the event space holds more than 200 people, including weddings.
