Lion Green Rd
A suburban road on Coulsdon's green hillside, at London's southern edge, where five 13-sided brick housing blocks by Mary Duggan won the RIBA Stirling Prize in its 30th anniversary year.
The story
Lion Green Road runs through Coulsdon, part of Croydon on the southern edge of London. It sits between low-rise green-belt housing on higher ground to the south and traditional suburban streets to the north, and close by is a scheduled monument associated with the historic Surrey Iron Railway. The road's best-known landmark is the housing scheme that shares its name. Commissioned by Croydon council and designed by Mary Duggan Architects, with RUFF Architects handling delivery, it holds 157 private and affordable homes in five prismatic 13-sided blocks. The site drops 8m and lies within a geological basin, which shaped the design. Brick laid in varied patterns keeps the sculptural volumes gentle against their surroundings. In 2026 the scheme won the RIBA Stirling Prize.
