Lewis Cubitt Park

The principal green space at King's Cross, this tree-lined park off Handyside Street borrows the relaxed lawns of Bloomsbury's garden squares but drops the railings, leaving open grass for picnics, play and games.

The story

Townsend Landscape Architects designed the park as a modern take on London's traditional garden squares. Gently mounded lawns flow through it, and together with trees and specimen shrubs they divide the space into smaller areas without fences, leaving room for play. It sits among residential blocks beside Coal Drops Yard and Cubitt Square, a short walk from King's Cross and St Pancras stations. Two PlayPod lockers hold free equipment, including a chess board, padel and pickle rackets, and lawn games such as yardzee, kubb and mölkky, with details on the PlayMade app. Soft play equipment appears in summer. On a typical day the lawns draw dog walkers, parents with toddlers, office workers kicking a ball at lunchtime and travellers passing time before a train.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Tree shade and plenty of benches make it a comfortable stop on hot days or while waiting for a train.
  • Dogs are a common sight on the lawns, so it works well for a walk with your own dog.
  • Several cafes sit around the park, handy for picking up a drink before settling on the grass.
