Le Meurice

Facing the Tuileries Garden since 1835, Le Meurice is a Paris palace hotel where Philippe Starck's playful touches meet Louis XVI suites, an Alain Ducasse dining room and Cédric Grolet's pastry boutique.

The story

Le Meurice opened in 1835 as a hotel for upper-class British travellers. It has since hosted Rudyard Kipling, Coco Chanel, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Salvador Dalí, who spent at least a month there each year. Its most recent renovation, in 2016, let Philippe Starck add subtle whimsy, including a frozen mirror you can draw on. Rooms change by floor, from Louis XVI presidential suites on the first floor to apartment-style rooms on the sixth and the Belle Etoile Royal Suite, whose terrace looks across all of Paris. Restaurant le Meurice Alain Ducasse takes its gilded, frescoed look from the Salon de la Paix at Versailles. Le Dalí sits beneath a vast gold and ochre ceiling mural by Ara Starck. Le Bar 228 pours more than 50 whiskies and malts, Cédric Grolet runs a pastry boutique, and Spa Valmont offers hammams.
