Jersey Zoo
Gerald Durrell's conservation zoo fills 32 landscaped acres in Trinity with over 100 species, many threatened in the wild, with a strong focus on primates and birds and enclosures planted with lush island greenery.
The story
Run by the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, Jersey Zoo puts captive breeding of endangered species first, and the life and work of founder Gerald Durrell is featured on site. Cages are few and discreet. Red-breasted geese wander the green near the entrance, and a colony of silver marmosets lives in the trees. Orangutans, gorillas, geladas, lemurs and giant tortoises are among the residents, alongside a reptile house, tropical frogs, a butterfly house, a tortoise tunnel and a walk-through aviary of Asian birds. Keepers give talks throughout the day, introducing animals by name. Special exhibitions rotate, including Wildlife Photographer of the Year. There are two cafés, one at the entrance and one inside beside a children's play area. The Trust's wider work reaches from Madagascar and Brazil to red-billed choughs and agile frogs here on Jersey.
