Hellenic American Union

Since 1957 this non-profit has run English and Greek courses and language exams in Athens, alongside its own galleries, a theater and a year-round calendar of cultural events.

The story

The Hellenic American Union is a public-service educational and cultural organization with an international focus. Its exams arm has administered language tests to more than two million candidates across Greece and the wider region, from ECCE and ECPE certificates to Cambridge English and the Certificate of Attainment in Greek, and the building also serves as a Pearson VUE test center. For learners, there are English and Modern Greek courses plus professional development seminars. Classrooms are fitted with smart boards, lessons can be taken in person or remotely, and students have use of a well-stocked library. The cultural side plays out in the Hellenic American Union Galleries, which have hosted shows such as Takis Tloupas's A Different Europe, and in its theater, where a movie club screens classics like Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
