Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
Frank Gehry's titanium, glass and limestone museum on the Bilbao riverside opened in 1997 and reshaped the city, housing art from the mid-twentieth century onward alongside Richard Serra's walk-through The Matter of Time.
The story
Born of a partnership between the Basque Institutions and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the museum opened in October 1997 and drove the urban, economic and social regeneration of Bilbao. Its 24,000 square metres, 9,000 of them for exhibitions, unfold across three levels arranged around an atrium and linked by curved walkways, titanium and glass lifts and staircases. The metal skin shifts with light and weather. The collection runs from Mark Rothko and Anselm Kiefer to Jenny Holzer and Eduardo Chillida, with temporary shows rotating through the galleries. The art spills outdoors too: Jeff Koons's flower-covered Puppy guards the entrance, Louise Bourgeois's Maman stands by the river and Anish Kapoor's Tall Tree and the Eye rises nearby. Each hour a mist installation veils the building, most atmospheric after sunset.
