Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project Site Office
Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is rising here in the Saadiyat Cultural District. This temporary project office oversees what will become the largest museum in the Guggenheim network, a colossal construction site visible from the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
The story
Covering 42,000 square metres, the museum takes its cue from traditional Middle Eastern courtyards, with clusters of galleries in varying heights and shapes. Once finished, it will hold more than 600 modern and contemporary works from around the world, with a particular focus on West Asia, North Africa and South Asia. Plans also include rotating exhibitions, educational programmes, a 350-seat theatre, a library and a research centre. Originally slated to open in 2012, the project has stretched over many years, and opening is now planned for 2026. It sits alongside the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum, part of the emirate's push to become a global cultural hub. For now it remains a working site, and the clearest views of its progress come from the neighbouring Louvre.
