Grand Rex
A starry-sky ceiling crowns the 2,702-seat Grande Salle of this Art Deco cinema on the Grands Boulevards, open since 1932 and listed as a historic monument, where films share the bill with concerts and premieres.
The story
Le Grand Rex bills itself as the largest cinema in the world, and its main auditorium sets the tone with lavish Art Deco decor under a ceiling painted as a night sky. The programme reaches well beyond new releases: film marathons, ciné-karaoke, orchestral screenings, red-carpet premieres, live concerts and the venue's signature water show, La Féerie des Eaux. Smaller rooms include the Grand Large screen and the Infinite room, with its own light show. The building also opens up behind the screen. The Rex Studios tour uses archive footage, a rebuilt projection booth and special effects, and rides a transparent panoramic lift behind the screen. Guided Sunday tours cover the halls and, weather permitting, the rooftop terrace, while an escape game moves players room to room through film-inspired sets.
Good to know
TAGGG AI- ✦Queues form outside for popular screenings in the Grande Salle, so arriving well ahead of the start time is wise.
- ✦Seats at the end of each row by the aisles are fold-out chairs, less comfortable than the plush main seats.
- ✦VIP tickets for the Grande Salle include escorted entry past the line, popcorn and a drink, with seating on the second floor.
