Frieze Masters

Old masters, antiquities and 20th-century icons share the stands at Frieze Masters, the historic-art counterpart to Frieze London, held for five days in The Regent's Park every October.

The story

Frieze Masters focuses on art made before the 21st century, with around 130 galleries taking part. Stands can range from paintings by Picasso, Klimt, Man Ray and Andy Warhol to work by Heidi Bucher, Rosalyn Drexler and Allison Katz. Old masters such as Hieronymus Bosch hang not far from canvases by Francis Bacon. Beyond painting and sculpture, the fair takes in ancient books and manuscripts, antiquarian maps, pottery from antiquity, statues, medieval armour and antique jewellery. It runs alongside Frieze London in The Regent's Park, and its curated programme sets historical pieces beside contemporary art. Despite the scale of what is on show, the aisles keep a calm, relaxed pace, which makes close looking at major works easy.
